Choosing a preschool for your youngster can be challenging; and the first decision of many to come regarding their education. Determining the program that will best meet your child’s needs is by far the most important thing. Whether this can be accomplished by sending your child to a private preschool is something that only you can research and decide.

In many cases, private preschool is the only choice available to parents. Preschool programs that are offered through the school district are often only available to children who are in need of special services in order to prepare them for Kindergarten. Children can receive speech, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and specialized learning environments through programs such as these. Three and four-year-old children are often called preschoolers. Preschool children are making developmental strides and express an interest in the world around them. They want to touch, taste, smell, hear, and test things for themselves. They are eager to learn. They learn by experiencing and by doing. Preschoolers learn from their play. They are busy developing skills, using language, and struggling to gain inner control. Your three year old will now begin to play cooperatively with other children in small groups, share his toys and develop friendships. Playtime may include structured games and fantasy activities. At this age your child is becoming more independent and you can expect him to dress himself and button clothes, brush his teeth with help, stack 9-10 blocks, draw circles and squares, use scissors, walk up steps by alternating his feet, jump from a step, hop, walk on his toes, pedal a tricycle, play with imaginary friends, have a very large vocabulary and use 3-4 word sentences and his speech should be 3/4 understandable. Over the next year his speech will become fully understandable.

Your child may now begin to ask ‘why’ questions, tell stories, remember nursery rhymes, appreciate special events, and understand daily routines. Once your child is able to climb out of his crib (and you have already lowered the mattress and removed the bumper pads), it is time to move him into a toddler bed. If your child is three feet tall, you may want to move him to a toddler bed even if he isn’t climbing out of his crib yet. The usual age for moving out of a crib is about eighteen months to two years.

Preschoolers want to establish themselves as separate from their parents. They are more independent than toddlers. They can express their needs since they have greater command of language.

Fears often develop during the preschool years. Common fears include new places and experiences and separation from parents and other important people. You can expect the preschool child to test you over and over again, to use profanity and other forbidden words, and to act very silly. Preschoolers may still have trouble getting along with other children, and sharing may still be difficult. Because of their developing imaginations and rich fantasy lives, they may have trouble telling fantasy from reality. They may also talk about imaginary friends. Preschoolers need clear and simple rules so that they know the boundaries of acceptable behavior.

Understanding their growth and development will help you guide preschoolers through this stage. This fact sheet lists some of the characteristics of preschoolers. These characteristics are listed for three main areas: physical (body), social (getting along with others) and emotional (feelings), and intellectual (thinking and language) development. Remember that all preschoolers are different and reach the various stages at different times.

The social and emotional development of preschoolers includes

They are learning to take turns and to share. Games and other activities can help preschoolers learn about taking turns. They enjoy pretending to be important adults (mother, father, doctor, nurse, police officer, mail carrier, etc.). They need to feel important and worthwhile. They need opportunities to feel more freedom and independence. They appreciate praise for their achievements. Horizontal, and circular motions. They can handle small objects (such as puzzles, pegboards, and parquetry sets). They grow about 3 inches taller in a year. •           They have more small muscle control. They can make representational pictures   (for example, pictures of houses, people, and flowers). They run on tip toes. They hop on one foot. They gallop. They begin to skip. They throw a ball overhand. They pump themselves on a swing. They like unzipping, unsnapping, and unbuttoning clothes. They dress themselves. They can cut on a line with scissors. They like lacing their own shoes (but not tying). They can make designs and write crude letters. They are very active and aggressive in their play.

On the surface, putting a toddler on a leash seems like such a degrading thing to do to a child. It seems almost as if these parents are treating their children as little better than dogs. Indeed, that is a common view to adopt especially for individuals do not have children and have never had to fear losing a child at a public venue. To put a little more perspective to this view, let’s look at the reasoning behind toddler leashes and how it compares with other child restraining devices.

Why Do We Need Toddler Leashes?

Toddlers are little explorers. They love to examine new things and often pay very little regard as to the whereabouts of Mummy or Daddy when they are in the midst of an important discovery. Toddler leashes fulfill a toddler’s need to continue the quest to learn everything possible about the strange new world around him (or her) while helping to keep him (or her) within the reach and relative security of a parent.

If you are a parent or if you have ever had to watch over a toddler, you may recall that it only takes a moment of distraction for a toddler to disappear from sight. In a crowded shopping mall with distractions abound, losing a child is a very real and frightening possibility. Not only is it extremely distressing for a parent to lose a child at a busy venue, it is also a traumatic experience for the child (once the child has discovered he has lost his parents), and a hassle for security to assist in the search for the child. In countries where child abductions are a real concern, toddler leashes on roaming children becomes a critical requirement.

Are Leashes Really Any Different to Other Child Restraining Devices?

The main issue with toddler leashes is the idea that a child is being treated like an animal. However, let’s examine this from a toddler’s perspective. If you were a child curious about the world around you and eager to see, touch, feel, hear and taste it, would you rather be bound to a parent or guardian by a string attached to your hand or be strapped into a stroller? For isn’t that the other purpose of a stroller? To keep toddlers from wandering off on their own so parents can focus their attention onto other things?

Being stuck in a stroller would be terribly frustrating to a toddler whose urge is to pick up the pebble on the grass, touch the flowers in a garden, or do any of the myriad of activities that toddlers do to satisfy their curiosity. While some toddlers might be happy to sit in a stroller on occasion, all toddlers, at some point, will desire to be free to move around on their own. From a psychological point of view, it would be preferable to allow a toddler some freedom of movement with a toddler leash than to leave him (or her) screaming and crying in stroller.

The purpose of many child restraining devices, such as the car seat, is to keep a child safe. Some toddlers do not agree with them and many dislike using them, however, parents still use them because it is necessary. Would that not also describe the function of a toddler leash – to keep toddlers safe? Even if the concern for child kidnapping is irrelevant, a toddler who is lost without adult supervision is in greater danger of getting hurt.

Conclusion

Toddler leashes provide parents with another option for keeping their toddlers safe and within reach. Considering the nature and need for a toddler to wander, a toddler leash fulfills both parent’s and toddler’s requirements. Toddlers are free to roam (within reason) and parents are not tasked with the duty of keeping their eyes on their child one hundred per cent of the time.

Fun Outdoor Games For Toddlers

Getting toddlers to play outside is important to encourage physical fitness and help develop new skills. Plus staying active will help your toddler to burn off excess energy, stay in shape and sleep better at night. When it comes to age appropriate outside activities for toddlers some of the best games to play are the classic childhood games, these games don’t require much equipment and can be updated easily to meet the needs of your kids.

Hide-and-go-seek is one of the most well known children’s games and is played all around the world. In a game of tag, one player is “it” and the other players must hide. At the start of the game the player who is “it” must count, before finding the other players. This allows parents to assist a child with learning how to count, the child could also be told to recite the alphabet before finding the other players.

The game can be made more fun for children by using balls, or playing under different rules. For example, toddlers will get a kick out of playing a game of freeze tag. In freeze tag, once a player is touched by “it” they become frozen and most remain in place until unfrozen by another player. Toddlers will benefit from the social aspect of the game, using teamwork and there creativity in order to untag frozen teammates and avoid getting frozen themselves.

Classic children’s games such as hopscotch are great ways of teaching a toddler to follow directions. In a game of hopscotch, toddlers can jump though numbered squares using there feet. Hopscotch is also a great way of developing gross motor skills, those related to the large muscle groups in the body and will also help a toddler develop there balance and coordination. Parents can draw out eight or more squares and number them in order, also helping there children to learn how to count while they play.

During the summer months, some of the most popular outside games for toddlers are water activities. Inflatable swimming pools are great for families with limited space or just prefer the convenience of having a smaller pool that toddlers are less likely to get injured in. Simple toys can be added into the pool to get hours of structured play and help a toddler develop there imagination, and ability to pretend.

A water slide is great fun for children and a water bouncer is a great toy for playing games of catch in the pool. Diving rings can be used for playing ring toss games or help a child develop there strength and confidence in the water while teaching swimming. Pool dive toys that look like dolphins, sharks, fish and other water creatures mimic real creatures and are fun to watch while teaching children about how these creatures look and move in the water.

There is no limit in the type of outdoor activities available for young children to play. Sandboxes allow children to learn to build and create. Popular sports such as basketball and baseball help children to challenge themselves and learn new skills.
