How to keep a toddler in her bed at night?

May 07, 2011 :: Posted by - :: Category - Toddler

Question by Mrs Florek: How to keep a toddler in her bed at night?
My 27 month old has started getting out of bed at bed time. We didn’t have a problem when we put her in to the “big girl bed” at first. She went to sleep with out a problem for almost 2 months. It has been a week of her being in her bed for about 5 to 10 mins and out of the room she goes. We go round and round for almost 2 hours putting her back in the bed. We have not changed any of our routines. Could this be a stage that she is going thu or do I maybe need to push her bed time back by a half hour or so. I put her in bed at 7:30 to 7:45 and she finaly goes to “sleep” around 9:45 to 10 pm. I am also 38 weeks pregnant and my husband works night so this is all on me. I have tried to sit nest to her bed but I can only do that for so long. (If I stay in one “position” for to long I start having braxton hick contractions) I really need my sleep also. She is staying home and that takes everything out of me to just keep up with her. I would like to know what other parents have
done to get there kids to stay in bed. I am almost to the point where I want to put her in the pack and play at night so she can’t run free when she should be sleeping. PLEASE SOME HELP!!!!!

Question about a “toddler” bed?

April 26, 2011 :: Posted by - :: Category - Toddler

Question by Sweet Southern Belle: Question about a “toddler” bed?
If this is a crazy idea don’t scream at me LOL but I was wondering if this could be used as a “toddler/big boy” bed for a while? It’s not the money we’re worried about it’s that my son is 12 months old right now and I’m due in march with another little boy. we’re going to keep my 12 month old son in the crib and keep the new baby in the pack and play until the older one is ready for a “big boy” bed. But at that point we want to put them into the same room and I don’t want a crib and a toddler bed in there at the same time b/c the room just doesn’t work well that way. Eventually we’ll get two toddler beds and that will work better but is this going to work for the time being?

Ashley D – this is SO SMART I have no idea why I never thought to do this. This was the concept I was going for so the room wouldn’t be crowded 24/7, just while they’re sleeping. You will be getting best answer points!!

If money is tight and you need to get him out of your bed but don’t have the room…why not. He’ll probably love it because it is Elmo..do what you have to do and what is right for your family. It’s the right size and serves the purpose you need it to.

from crib to “big girl bed”?

January 15, 2011 :: Posted by - :: Category - Toddler

Question by *Lexi’s Mommy*: from crib to “big girl bed”?
In 2 months we will be moving into a new house. When we move we were thinking about getting our daughter a toddler bed. I was wondering how to try and get her to stay in the bed and not get out of bed when we leave the room. Right now, we put her into her crib while shes still awake and she falls asleep. But if I put her into a “big girl bed” I dont think shes going to stay in it very long before trying to leave her room. Any suggestions??? (She is 18 months old…so when we move she’ll be 20 months…is that a good age to start trying)

Answer by jayne
Personally, I think it is best to keep your child in the crib as long as she doesn’t try to climb out. She is a good sleeper now, why mess with things? If you wait til she is a bit older it is easier to get her to understand she needs to stay in her bed. Toddlers are impulsive and act without thinking.

have you experienced your toddler getting out of her “big boy/girl bed” during the night?

December 25, 2010 :: Posted by - :: Category - Toddler

Question by lovinit: have you experienced your toddler getting out of her “big boy/girl bed” during the night?
she’s almost 28 mon old and she got her toddler bed about 4 weeks ago. she has done wonderfully in it, and is so proud of it as well. 5 days ago, around 3:30am, i hear a noise- i woke up to find her coming into my room (which is right beside hers) and so i put her in bed with me. then, she did the same thing the next night, and two days after that, she did it again. as much as i love sleeping with her, i don’t like it b/c i can’t sleep (she is right next to me all night, lol) and i don’t want it to become a habit. THEN last night, putting her to bed was normal, but she’s started crying because she wanted to stay up with me. i just told her it’s night-night time, and walked out. i don’t want to fuel the flame, you know? then about 20 min later, to my shock, she got out of her bed and walked out into the living room! i put her back, and of course she was screaming and crying. she banged on the door and everything. i was just in awe. this is crazy behaviour to me!
she’s usually not like this at all! she has tons of affection from me all the time and a set schedule/routine. she goes to bed around 7:30-7:45 every night.

is this a phase?? i guess all i can do is be consistent w/ putting her back in bed and just ride it out… ?

Best answer:

Answer by Mz.Amber M. Reed
You need to just put her back in bed if you cator to her by letting her sleep with you she will continue doing it! Good Luck to you they can be very attached at this age!

How to get toddler to sleep in “big boy bed?”?

November 15, 2010 :: Posted by - :: Category - Toddler

Question by beachcutie03: How to get toddler to sleep in “big boy bed?”?
My oldest son is 21 months (in 2 days) and he is sleeping in his crib still. Well my husband and I had a new baby over 6 weeks ago and I’d like to get him in the crib around 3/4 months. So for Christmas my Mom got my son a toddler bed. We set it up and got bedding for it and made it a big deal and he seems generally excited about the bed. During the day he’ll lay on it, play on it etc. About a week ago we got him to sleep in it half the night. We didn’t continue to let him sleep in it b/c we wanted to get a gate for his room so he would escape his room in the middle of the night w/o us knowing about it. Well we fianlly go the the gate and tonight we tried getting him to sleep in his new bed. I tried 3 times and all 3 times he SCREAMED at his door. So after about an hour past his bedtime I put him in his crib and he’s now passed out. How can I get him to sleep in his toddler bed??? HELP!

ps the crib is in the same room as his toddler bed b/c they will be sharing a room.

Little Tikes Bed – Twin Bed Or Toddler Bed – Which Will You Choose?

Little Tikes Bed – Twin Bed Or Toddler Bed – Which Will You Choose?

When you are making a decision to buy a Little Tikes bed, the first question you must ask yourself is do I buy a twin bed or a toddler bed? Many parents have struggled with this question when buying a Little Tikes bed. Below are different styles, characteristics, pros and cons, that will surely help make your decision between buying a twin bed or toddler bed a little easier.

Little Tikes Twin Bed
These great beds come in a variety of different characters and colors for your child to enjoy. First of all, there is Lightning McQueen, of course he is from the great movie CARS. Lots of kids love this character and only get to enjoy him more as a Little Tikes twin bed. The Lightning McQueen twin bed has lots of colorful stickers, decals and realistic wheel hubs to make him almost real enough to drive.

Next up would be the Sports Car bed. This twin bed comes in a variety of colors to suit your taste including blue, cherry, white, black, green and pink. These colors allow you to match your room color or go with a theme to create that perfect room for your “Little Tike”.

For the “Little Princess” on your bed shopping list we have the Storybook Cottage twin bed. You will have no trouble getting your child to sleep in this twin bed. The Storybook Cottage bed is also big enough for your child and a friend to play on and let their imagination and creativity take them to magical places for hours at a time. It also has a storage area in the headboard for books or toys.

If you decide to buy a Little Tikes twin bed, you know from the information above that there are lots of different characteristics and styles, but they are also common in many ways.

1. They all hold a standard size twin bed mattress and box spring
2. They are large beds and require lots of room
3. Enough room for mom or dad as well
4. Made from durable thick plastic
5. Range in price from around 0.00 – 0.00 U.S. “could be more or less”
6. Recommended for ages 3 and up

Little Tikes Toddler Bed
Like the twin bed, the toddler bed has a variety of different characters and colors as well. Lets start with the “little brother” of Lightning McQueen, the Lightning McQueen Roadster toddler bed. Of course he is very similar to his “big brother” in many ways with great looks, colors, decals and realistic wheel hubs. However, given the fact that it is a toddler bed makes him obviously smaller, but more easily accessible for younger children.

Up next in the toddler bed line is Thomas Tank. He looks amazing, and will give your child memories to last a life time. Thomas Tank has lots of storage areas for toys, books and collectibles, he even has a storage chest at the front for additional items like clothing, toys or P.J’s. The Thomas Tank toddler bed also has train tracks built into the bed rails for your childs toy trains.

The last toddler bed to discuss is the Disney Princess bed. Like its “cousin”, the Storybook Cottage twin bed, it also has a storage area with shutters built into the headboard for books or toys. This toddler bed as low rails with rounded sides to make climbing in easy for your child. The great looks of this toddler bed with its shingled look and canopy style roof will make your little girls transformation from crib to toddler bed easy.

Like the twin bed the toddler bed has similar characteristics as well.

1. They hold a standard crib mattress
2. They do not require lots of room
3. There is not enough room for mom or dad to lay with their child
4. Made from durable thick plastic
5. Range in price from around 1.60 – 9.99 U.S. “could be more or less”
6. Recommended for ages 18 months to 5 years (depending on your childs growth rate)

As you can tell there are quite a few factors to consider when buying a little tikes twin bed or toddler bed. Theses factors include, practicality, price, space, and the current age and needs of your child. I am a father of 3 great kids and have lots of experience and parenting advice to offer. Skipping the Toddler Bed Stage ? How to Make it Safer

September 23, 2010 :: Posted by - :: Category - Toddler

Skipping the Toddler Bed Stage ? How to Make it Safer

When it is time for a toddler to move from the crib to a bed, many parents fuss over the safety aspects of a twin bed. At the same time, they feel that a toddler bed is a waste of money as most kids would quickly outgrow such a bed by the time they are five or even sooner.

If you are seriously thinking of skipping the toddler bed stage and let your child graduate straight to a twin bed, you can try considering the following methods to make the transition safer for your child.

Put Mattress On The Floor

The most worrying factor for parents when they move their toddler from the crib is the risk of their child rolling off the bed while they are asleep in the middle of the night. One way you can minimize this risk is to let your toddler get used to sleeping on a twin mattress first.

Buy a twin mattress and put it on top of a foam puzzle mat. You can make the mat slightly larger than the mattress to ensure that your child would not land on the hard floor should he or she happens to roll off the mattress. Alternatively, you can line the sides with cushions and pillows to prevent the same.

Once your toddler has learned not to roll off the mattress, you can then move him or her onto the bed. Of course, you can always resort to a portable bed rail and it is indeed recommended to keep your toddler safe and secure while asleep. But one other reason why you should start by putting the mattress on the floor is the risk of your toddler falling off the bed when awake.

Buy Yourself Some Time

You have to bear in mind that some toddlers may have a habit of standing and jumping on the bed. Depending on your child’s development, some toddlers may still have problem with balance when standing on a mattress which can be unstable and soft. Others may still require an adult’s assistance in getting on and off the bed. Putting the mattress on the floor first buys you some time until your child is truly ready for the bed with minimal risk of falling off it.

Step Stool And Low Beds

As twin beds are higher off the ground from toddler beds, you can also get a step stool to make it easier for your child to get on and off a twin bed unassisted. You can also try to get one which has a mattress base which is lower to the ground. Different twin beds have different heights and you wouldn’t want to end up with one which is too high for your toddler to climb on.

Of course, how high it will eventually end up will also have to do with the thickness of your mattress. So, do not be tempted to buy an overly thick mattress that makes the bed higher for your toddler.

Extra Wide Bed Rails

As mentioned, a portable bed rail is recommended with a twin bed. If you are truly worried of your toddler falling off the bed, you can try installing an extra wide bed rail to take care of the problem. Some bed rails are up to 56 inches in width, securing a greater area of the bed to keep your toddler from rolling onto the floor.

At the end of the day, a toddler bed is not always necessary. Once your child has grown too big for the crib, you can always move him or her to a twin bed by assessing his or her readiness and taking the necessary precautions to make it safe and secure.

Choosing Between a Toddler Bed and a Twin Bed for Your Child

Choosing Between a Toddler Bed and a Twin Bed for Your Child

When your toddler reaches a certain height, it is always prudent to transition him or her from the crib to a bed. This is because of the high risk of your toddler falling, climbing or jumping out of the crib.

However, many parents also find it difficult to decide if they should let their child graduate straight to a twin bed or should they start with a toddler bed. If you are wondering what you should do, consider the following factors when you make your decision.

Readiness

Not every child finds it easy to move from the crib to a bed. Some go through the transition without a fuss while others would put up a fight to keep their crib. If your toddler shows signs that he or she is reluctant to move to a big bed, then you might like to start with a toddler bed first. This is because a toddler bed is small and feels snug compared to a twin or full-sized bed. Furthermore, there are many cute toddler bed designs that appeal to kids of that age group. This may go a long way in helping your child to make the transition.

Independence

You have to bear in mind that an adult bed is higher from the ground. If your toddler has not reached a height or developed the ability to get on and off a twin bed on his or her own, you would be better off with a toddler bed. Such a bed is low to the ground and a toddler can easily get on and off it without much difficulty. If you insist on getting a twin bed, at least check the height of the mattress base from the ground. Because different beds have different heights, check this aspect before buying one for your young child.

Bed Rails

Most toddlers require a bed that is “boxed” in. This is to prevent them from rolling off the bed since they have yet to develop the ability to stay within the bed boundaries while asleep. Toddler beds come with built in bed rails that keep them safe and secure. If you do decide to get a twin bed instead of a toddler bed for your child, then you would need to buy the bed rails separately. However, you would then need to do additional research on this item as not all bed rails are the same when it comes to quality and safety level.

Practicality

Most parents are reluctant to buy a toddler bed because of the short-term nature of its use. Usually, toddler beds can only be used until your child reaches the age of five or fifty pounds in weight. Bearing that in mind, you would have to evaluate the physical size of your child when you make your purchase decision. If you suspect that your child would quickly outgrow a toddler bed, then you might like to buy an adult bed instead. Otherwise, you would have to buy another bed sooner than you expect.

In summary, whether you decide to buy a toddler bed or a twin bed, always be aware of safety issues. Different kids develop at a different pace and as a parent, you would be the best judge of the type of bed most suitable for your little one.
