Question by girly: When/how to transition to a “toddler bed”?!?
Our 16 (almost 17) month old hates his crib. He can almost climb out himself even on the lowest matress setting. He usually goes to sleep in it, but wakes around 3am and calls out to us (screams out “DAdadadaDAdada”) to come get him and place him in between us in our bed. This is not very safe anymore because he squirms around and crawls under the covers and we are afraid he will suffocate.

So, we bought a little toddler bed. It uses his crib matress. It is a safe distance from the ground so if he were to fall out it wouldn’t hurt him.

Is now a good time/age to transition him? at what age did you transition your little one? I’m afraid he’ll just get out of his bed and wander around and refuse to sleep because he won’t be as confined.

Any input on this subject would be appreciated!

It sounds like your child is ready. When they can get out or almost, it’s time to switch before your little guy falls out and gets hurt. As far as the transition… pick a time when little sleep won’t hurt you too much, lol. Some kids take to it quickly and others take some time. To get him out of your bed, you will just have to be consistent on putting him back into his own bed. It could very well keep you up half the night, but it’s the only way to do it. Trust me, I’ve got 3 kids who have all taken a turn in sleeping in our bed… and I’m working on getting the youngest to stay in her bed! They know in the middle of the night that we are at our weakest because we are tired and want to sleep so you have to be resolved to getting up to put them back to bed no matter how often or what time it is. Good luck!
