Question by cihuatl: Is Soy milk…?
bad for infants to drink? When my nephew was born he did not want to drink breast milk and my sister-in-law did not want to feed him formula. I suggested Soy formula because I drink Soy milk and know it is very nutritous. She stated “Oh No! are you kidding me, it’s very poor for infants simply because it slows down their development” I’ve never ever heard of such thing. Has anybody else heard this just before if so can you supply me with some links? THANKS!

She is wrong. There is no such factor soy milk slows down developement. The only time they shouldn’t take soy is if they are allergic to it.

soy formula is okay. but, regular formula is okay too. if the kid isn’t eating, that’s definitely worse than feeding him formula. the kid has to eat. some mothers don’t do well with breast-feeding, the latching on etc…

    Cow’s milk vs. soy

Most doctors recommend cow’s milk—based formula because it resembles breast milk most closely and the majority of babies tolerate it, says pediatrician Ari Brown, M.D., author of Baby 411: Clear Answers & Smart Advice for Your Baby’s First Year. Cow’s milk is also a better source of protein than soy formula, and infants can absorb the calcium in cow’s milk more efficiently than they can with soy.

Soy formula, though, which uses soy protein in place of cow’s milk protein, is a perfectly safe alternative for full-term infants if your family does not eat animal products. (Talk to your doctor about what’s best for your preemie.) Pediatricians may also recommend it if your child is unable to digest lactose (milk sugar) or if she seems intolerant to cow’s milk formula and becomes gassy, fussy, or vomits during feedings.

If you decide to feed your full-term baby soy formula, your pediatrician might recommend additional vitamin and mineral supplements for you to give her.

Soy milk is fine it’s all my 2 sons could drikn they were allergic to milk! The infant soy has added proteins/vitamins they need like regular formula.

Never heard of that. When my breast milk slowed I supplemented with soy formula. I wouldn’t suggest plain old soy milk for someone that young just because it doesn’t have enough of all of the nutrients they need…but soy formula does.

Not everyone believes the hype about soy products.

Did you know soybeans are one of the most common genetically modified foods? Unless your soy products specifically state they contain no GMO ingredients, or they are certified organic you are eating franken-food, and participating in a huge unregulated unsupervised test of this controversial “food” which is banned in Europe due to concerns about the safety of eating genetically modified substances.

Personally, I would not feed my infant soy based anything unless there was NO other option. I have never yet met a baby who refused to drink breast milk. I have heard of mothers who had some difficulties establishing breastfeeding, or who ended up pumping their breastmilk due to nipple confusion/nipple preference in the baby, but a baby who did not WANT breastmilk? That’s just unheard of.

There is nothing wrong with soy bace formula. My youngest had to use it due to allergies to milk.

My baby was on enfamil soy formula, it is not harmful to babies. Milk is not good for baby to drink until he/she is a year old. Formula or breast milk is all they should have. I think your sister-in-law is lacking education on babies and should get some before she harms her baby.
