Will teaching ASL to a toddler “stunt” their language skills?

May 15, 2011 :: Posted by - :: Category - Toddler

Question by Jynnipher: Will teaching ASL to a toddler “stunt” their language skills?
I have a 17 month old son and I’ve been teaching him ASL, he talks with his hands all the time but only says “da” when he points at things. He can say mama, dada, and hi – but anything beyond that is a no way.

Granted – I know his language skills are still developing, but my friend (who has a 15 months old son) is saying “no mama” and “bye” and my son has yet to put two words together, much less say “bye” (if I ask him to say bye, he waves).

I know kids develop at different stages, but I’m wondering if teaching him ASL causing him to talk to me via sign language verses trying to talk. He does babble, so I take that as a good sign. He learns new signs pretty fast (in a day or two), but he just won’t try to say the words; he prefers signing over trying to speak.

I’m not overtly concerned, yet. His next doctors appointment isn’t until March 26th, and I’ll talk to the doctor – but I’m wonder what you think.

Thanks!

I’d definitely try to enforce a verbal language before focusing on sign language. I suggest to stop teaching him sign language at least until he gets a handle on English.

question about toddler “stimming”?

May 14, 2011 :: Posted by - :: Category - Toddler

Question by geri: question about toddler “stimming”?
Hi all
I have a little boy just turned 2 in October, who is exhibiting behaviour which after research, I have found out is called “stimming”. I looked it up online because it was beginning to worry me a bit.

Basically, he spends a lot of time doing this eye-rolling thing, walking up and down our hall looking at the walls in a kind of sideways glance. Also he spends an unusual amount of time filling and emptying boxes of bricks he has – I’ve since found out these repetitive behaviour patterns are known as self stimulatory behaviour.

I’m a full-time mom, very hands-on, and spend hours with him encouraging interactive play with me – reading books (he’s slightly behind with his speech), doing puzzles, drawing, etc. and he’s rarely left to sit and play on his own during the day, but when I go to the loo, when we have a visitor, or go out to the kitchen to get his lunch ready, he’ll start this behaviour and act like he doesn’t want to be interrupted.

Otherwise, he’s very social, affectionate, and is making good progress with his words.

Of course when I searched this behaviour online, “autism” came up in a lot of results – he’s clearly not at the extreme of autism, but should I be concerned? I mean, will he grow out of this, or should I look for an advice from the Dr.?

Smoking Toddler Enters Rehab, Trying to Quit 4 Packs Per Day

Daily News @ RevolutionNews.US ~ (CBS NEWS) The chain-smoking Indonesian baby who gained instant worldwide fame via a viral video of him puffing away has gone into rehab – and given up cigarettes. But now, reports CBS News Correspondent Betty Nguyen, Aldi Suganda, 2, is heading home, and there’s concern he may give in to temptation and resume smoking once he gets there. The video of Aldi smoking sparked outrage. He was smoking up to 40 cigarettes a day. Smoking Baby Puffing Away Pictures Smoking Baby And in July, a CBS News team traveled to the remote fishing village of Musi Banyuasin, on the Indonesian island of Sumatra in search of Aldi. Our crew found him, cigarette in hand. His mother, Diana, said she felt helpless in her efforts to breaking Aldi’s two-four pack-a-day habit. “I don’t know of what will happen in the future,” she said through an interpreter. ” … We surely hope he will quit. … But what can we do but accept it is as it is?” Given the intense interest in his story, “The Early Show” wanted to see how the child was doing, two months later. It turns out Aldi and Diana mother were taken to the capital, Jakarta, for intensive medical and psychological treatment, a trip paid for by the local government. Jakarta translates to “complete victory,” which is just what Diana was hoping for. “I brought him here to stop smoking,” she said. “I came to Jakarta for help.” The night before treatment began, Diana watched her child smoke what she hoped would be his last
